Camera Notes 9/14/11

Note-taking on Camera Techniques

INTERVIEWING:
• What seven items should you bring with you when you are shooting an interview?
(Clocks Tick Tock Making Heads Pound Loudly)
Camera
Tripod
Tape
Microphone
Headphones
Power
Light

• Shooting into a light source = Silhouette


• Where do you want your light source?
Behind the camera.


• On what object should you focus the camera?
Zoom in on the nose.

• No tripod = BAD! (shaky camera footage)


• Date and Time = Never...Display button will have the option to have or not have it.

• SP/EP- Standard play, and Extended play.

• Camera shoots in..........Standard play!

• Pre-Roll-


• Post-Roll-Roll camera for 5 seconds before you interview, and 3-5 seconds after you interview.


CAMERA SHOTS:

***BACKGROUND: Dynamic- has some depth, not plain.
Interviewee should be 6-8 feet from the wall. and the interviewee IS the shot, not the interviewer.
Microphones are to be heard NOT SEEN.
• 1 Shot = Middle of chest to above the head.

• 1 Shot with graphic = Middle of the chest above the head. ( could have slip to the right for an o.t.s. shot)

• 2 Shot = For the show ONLY.

• CU- Close up

• MS- Medium Shot

• LS- Long Shot

• ECU- Extreme Close Up
Series of shots makes for overall a better video.
• Rule of thirds- Imagenary lines are drawn dividing images into thirds, and place important elements on the rule of thirds.


CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
• Tilt - Up and down.


• Pan - Side to side


• Zoom - Getting closer or farther away from the subject.


• Dolly - Camera on wheels.

LIGHTS
• Key - Main bright light in front, but mainly shot from the side.


• Fill -Fills in the shadows opposite of the key light.


• Back -What separates the interviewee from the background.


MICROPHONES:
• Unidirectional- Microphone that picks up from one direction.

• Omnidirectional- Comes from all directions. ( microphone on top of the camera)

• Cardiod- Shaped like a heart.

• Lav/Lapel Microphone- Microphones that you can clip to your shirt.

• Boom Microphone- A microphone on a pole.(usually unidirectional)

Notes 9/12/11

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.

Broadcast journalism is the reporting of current events that are newsworthy through television, radio, and internet.


List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

What are the differences between print journalism and broadcast journalism?
1. Broadcast journalism is much more current, and can spread the story faster.

2. Print jouirnalism allows you to read what You want, when you want to.

3. Print journalism is much more detailed because there isnt a time limit.


How is the Internet impacting broadcast journalism?
The internet is the best of both worlds. It's a mixture of both print and broadcast journalism.
